What is the difference between a lining figure and an old style figure

Oldstyle figures also known as non-lining, lowercase, hanging, or text figures have varying heights and alignments, as opposed to lining figures, which are of uniform height and alignment.

It is less intrusive than lining figures, allowing the numerals to blend with the surrounding lowercase characters. Lining figures are most often the height of the capital letters, aligning with the baseline and the cap height. Lining figures also called aligning, cap, or modern figures approximate capital letters in that they are uniform in height, and generally align with the baseline and the cap height. Lining figures are all the same height, and align on the baseline and most commonly the cap height, thus the name aligning.

Old style figures approximate lowercase characters in that they have an x-height as well as fixed-arrangement ascenders and descenders. Numbers and heights: capitals numbers have a height similar to the uppercase letters, sometimes a little less.

Similarly, the old style numbers share the stage with lowercase letters, also with slight variations. Small caps are used in running text as a form of emphasis that is less dominant than all uppercase text, and as a method of emphasis or distinctiveness for text alongside or instead of italics, or when boldface is inappropriate.

AM stands for ante meridiem and PM stands for post meridiem, which are Latin phrases meaning before midday, and after midday. They have the same names, except for their dot suffixes:. Since you have one of them already covered by your default figures, all you need to do is create one, two, or all of the other three. Another cool trick: By default, figure components are not automatically aligned.

This allows to easily re-use proportional figures for tabular figures and vice versa. This example will create zero. Same thing with one , etc. Keep going until you have four styles, one of them being the default:. And Boom! Based on the heuristics described above, Glyphs can auto-generate the numeral features, lnum , onum , pnum , tnum :. Update Changed title. Update Changed the name of the button Refresh to Update.

Proportional Lining Figures work well when used with proportional text set in all caps because the numbers will all sit on the baseline with the capital letters.

Because the characters have varying widths they don't work as well in columns of numbers. Tabular Old Style Figures is an option when you like the look of figures with varying heights but you need the numbers to line up in columns such as in financial documents, tables, charts, or numbered lists. Because they are monospaced, tabular figures may not look as well in headlines and other display text that includes numbers. Instead of doing a lot of kerning to close up the extra space around a 1, for instance, go with proportional figures.

Tabular Lining Figures keep all your numbers lined up in tables and columns while also lining up horizontally with capital letters and currency symbols. As with Tabular Old Style, these often don't look as good at display sizes where lining up in columns is not needed. Some programs including Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Publisher support the swapping of a numeral style if a given typeface supports it.
