Who is bhrigu

Seeing the decorum of Lord Vishnu, Bhrigu was pleased and declared him superior amongst the Tridevas. According to Hindu theology, goddess of prosperity and wife of Lord Vishnu, Maha Laxmi also witnessed the whole incident, as she was also present in the Dhama at that time.

She could not tolerate disrespect displayed by Maharishi Bhrigu towards Lord Vishnu and cursed him that henceforth she would never visit Brahmins and they will all live in absence of wealth. On hearing this curse from Maha Laxmi, Maharishi told her about the true nature of his visit. Maha Laxmi then told Maharishi, that her curse would still haunt Brahmins but whenever any Brahmin would worship Lord Vishnu, he would be liberated from the curse.

How could he disturb their privacy? More so, how could he even dare to curse the deities who, by their mercy, had bestowed upon him many favors and made him so illustrious? Even when he had been unimaginably haughty, the Gods had displayed forbearance and kindness when they could have burnt him to ashes by a mere glance.

Only then Bhrighu realized that the best of merits was to remain free of vain pride and conceit. He begged pardons from the Gods who were glad to bless him, seeing that he had realized his folly. Since then the Trimurtis have been the supreme owners of the purnahuti and the devotees could offer the aahuti to the God of their choice and devotion. After the incident of testing of trinity, Maharishi Bhrigu decided to write his famous book of astrology, the Bhrigu Samhita, to help Brahmins earn their living.

Since knowing the future enables us to secure fortune or avoid misfortune, Bhrigu is called the father of fortune , and Lakshmi, goddess of fortune, is referred to as Bhargavi, his daughter.

All strategy, as we know, is based on the ability to accurately predict the future. That makes the forecaster Bhrigu a much venerated sage. But who is this Bhrigu? The name, Bhrigu, occurs repeatedly in Hindu scriptures in various contexts. He is part of a long history of battles between rishis and Kshatriyas. It is said that it is he who brought fire from the gods to the humans. One of his wives, Puloma, was once abducted by an asura.

The glory of the child was so great that the asura was killed. Later, Bhrigu blamed Agni, the fire god, who was supposed to watch over and protect Puloma. Bhrigu cursed that Agni would consume everything, pure and foul, henceforth.

Chyavana and his wife, Arushi, had a son called Aurava. He, too, would have destroyed the Kshatriyas but was prevented from doing so by his grandfather Bhrigu. So Aurva turned his anger into a horse. A fire-breathing horse which plunged itself into the sea.

The sweat of this horse makes the sea salty. The fire of this horse is responsible for creating mists above the oceans. Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this column are that of the writer. He created the monster spirits Virabhadra and Mahakali from his matted hair.

Virabhadra and Kali ravaged the yagna and killed many of its guests. Virabhadra approached Bhrigu and threw him on the ground. Manibhadra kicked him and plucked off his moustache. Later, after the yagna was destroyed and Daksha was killed, all the gods prayed to Shiva to resuscitate Daksha.

Shiva was pleased. He forgave them and revived Daksha. This story is in the Brahmanda Purana, Section 3, Chapter 1. They were transported to Janaloka , the heavenly realm of sages. Vashishta and the others remained at Janaloka for many Manvantaras. He invited all of the eminent devas and rishis. During the yagna, Brahma fell in love with some damsels, causing his semen to be discharged. Brahma put it in the sacrificial fire, and one by one, the eight sages were reborn from the fire.

Bhrigu was adopted by Varuna and his wife Charsni. Thus, Bhrigu was also called Varuni Bhrigu in this birth. In this birth, Bhrigu married Puloma, a daughter of Kashyapa Rishi. Meanwhile, Chyavana, who became a famous rishi, had two wives: Sukanya and Arusi. Shukra became the guru of the Asuras. This story is in the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. In this second birth, Bhrigu rishi married Puloma, a daughter of Kashyapa.

Puloma and Bhrigu started living together in an ashram. She soon became pregnant with a son. Once, Bhrigu went for his morning ablutions and left Puloma in the care of Agni deva. At that time, a rakshasa named Puloma came to the ashram and saw the beauty of Puloma. This rakshasa had actually been betrothed to Puloma before she married Bhrigu and was still enamored by her.
